Yorkshire Property Flood Resilience Model

EcoStyle has recently designed and manufactured a demonstration model for Yorkshire Flood Resilience, highlighting the risks of flooding and showing residents how to protect homes from flood damage.

The model consists of two houses, each with a back garden. One home has property flood resilience (PFR) measures installed to help reduce the risk of flood damage, as well as making the drainage in the garden more sustainable. The residents in the second house haven’t taken any precautions at all, and like many homes in the UK, it is not resilient to flooding.

Water is poured onto both properties to simulate flooding. The house with property flood resilience measures installed resists flooding, and shows how to minimise the impact of floodwater entering the home. The second home floods badly, simulating the extensive damage often experienced through flooding.

The model is on display in a flood-themed ‘Living with Water’ community hub and learning laboratory at Wilberforce Sixth Form College.

Lauren Davidson, Project Officer for Yorkshire Flood Resilience, said: ‘The model is a fantastic tool that we’re using to help raise awareness of the benefits of having property flood resilience measures installed in your home. It enables people to see for themselves the difference that the measures make, helping them to understand how they look and how they work in a domestic property. As well as showing the model to people to raise awareness, it will also feature in an informative video on our website and social media platforms to help us reach an even wider audience.’

Yorkshire Flood Resilience is one of three DEFRA-funded pathfinder partnership projects nationwide that are working to raise awareness of property flood resilience and its benefits among home and business owners, as well as those working in the insurance, construction and property sectors. In Yorkshire, the project is being delivered by the City of York Council.
